A pediatric tooth extraction is the removal of a child’s tooth that cannot be saved or that is causing a problem. Children’s tooth extractions are common in pediatric dentistry, and most are simple, quick, and done with the area fully numbed.
At Party Time Children’s Dental on Wilshire Boulevard in Koreatown, Los Angeles, we only recommend removing a tooth after looking at whether it can be repaired first. When an extraction is the right choice, we explain each step to you and to your child in plain language before we begin.

Common reasons a dentist may recommend a kids tooth extraction:
If a baby tooth is lost early, the dentist may recommend a space maintainer to keep room for the permanent tooth. Nervous kids may benefit from nitrous oxide.

Exam and X-ray
The dentist checks the tooth and roots, often with a digital X-ray, to plan the safest approach.
Numbing first
Numbing gel, then local anesthetic, so the area is fully asleep before anything else happens.
Comfort options
If your child feels anxious, nitrous oxide may be offered. General anesthesia may be discussed for extensive treatment.
Gentle removal
The dentist loosens and lifts the tooth out. Kids usually feel pressure and wiggling, not pain.
Gauze and instructions
Your child bites on gauze, and you leave with written after-care instructions.
A simple extraction often takes only a few minutes once the area is numb.
