When Should My Child Have an Orthodontic Evaluation?

An early orthodontic evaluation can check how your child’s jaw and teeth are developing, sometimes as early as age 6. Early evaluations help the dentist spot bite or spacing concerns and decide whether to monitor growth or plan treatment later.

Orthodontic Care by Age

Ages 6 to 7: first bite check

An early orthodontic evaluation checks jaw growth and spacing while baby and permanent teeth are both present.

Ages 7 to 10: monitoring

Many children simply get watched as they grow. Some benefit from early treatment or a space maintainer.

Ages 10 to 14: active treatment

Once enough permanent teeth are in, braces or Invisalign clear aligners may begin.

After treatment: retainers

Retainers hold the new positions.

An early check does not mean early braces. For most children the recommendation is simply to keep watching as the jaw grows, so treatment happens at the right moment rather than too soon.
