When Should My Baby Have a First Dental Visit?

Your baby should have a first dental visit by their first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth coming in. The visit is short and gentle.

Much of the visit is about you: learning how to clean your baby’s teeth, what to expect with teething, and how feeding habits affect teeth.

What Happens at the Visit?

The dentist checks your baby’s gums and first teeth, often with your baby sitting on your lap, and answers your questions.

For an older child who has never seen a dentist, read your child’s first dental visit. After the first visit, your child moves on to regular kids dental checkups.

First visits are usually short and focus on a gentle check and answering your questions.

X-rays are usually not needed for babies unless the dentist has a specific concern.
